The action of alkalies upon natural and artificial cellulosic fibres is facilitated by the addition of mixtures of phenols, e.g. halogen phenols with aliphatic, alicyclic or aryl-aliphatic polyhydric alcohols which contain at least one more carbon atom than the number of hydroxy groups. Suitable alcohols are glycols obtained by the oxidation of olefines, other than ethylene, pinacones obtained by the reduction of ketones and the polyhydric alcohols obtained by the action of organomagnesium halides upon polycarboxylic esters, polyketones, polyaldehydes, ketone and aldehyde carboxylic esters, hydroxycarboxylic esters and hydroxycarbonyl compounds. In examples: (1) a mixture of commercial cresol with pinacone or pinacone hydrate is added to a caustic soda lye of 30 DEG B</>ae. Raw dry cotton tissues and yarns are immediately wetted with this lye; (2) a mixture of commercial cresol with 1 : 6- tetraethylhexane-1 : 6-diol (obtained from adipic acid cyclohexylester and ethyl magnesium bromide) is added to a caustic soda lye; (3) a mixture of p-chlorphenol or commercial xylenols with methylcyclohexanediols prepared by oxidation of commercial tetrahydrotoluene with potassium permanganate is added to a caustic soda lye; (4) a mixture of technical xylenols with 1-phenylpropane-2 : 3-diol is added to a mercerizing caustic soda lye. Specifications 259,394, [Class 42 (i), Fabrics, Finishing &c.], and 279,784, [Class 15 (ii), Dyeing, Processes &c. for], are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) refers also to the use of mixtures of phenols with unsaturated polyhydric alcohols containing at least one more carbon atom than the number of hydroxy groups. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
