This application relates to a telecommunications system for an underground mine with tunnels. A plurality of relay nodes 16 are disposed in the tunnels in the mine. Each node has a first antenna (26, Fig. 2A) connected to a first radio (24, Fig. 2A) and a second antenna (32, Fig. 2A) connected to a second radio (30, Fig. 2A). The antennas are internally located within a housing of the node. The antennas are directional and point in opposite directions. One of the radios may act as a WiFi access point of a mobile device 18. Both of the radios participate in mesh communications with neighbouring relay nodes 16. Each node includes a power supply. At least some of the nodes may receive power by means of Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) 70. A bag for holding and suspending a node is also disclosed (Fig. 9).
