PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a porous carbon electrode for a solid polymer type fuel battery which is high in surface smoothness.SOLUTION: A porous carbon electrode comprises a porous carbon electrode base material with at least three coating layers formed on at least one side of the porous carbon electrode base material and each including carbon powder and a water-repellent agent. It is preferred that the coating layers each have a thickness of 2-50 μm. It is more preferred that each coating is uniform in thickness or arranged to be thicker or thinner at a position closer to the outside, and the coating layers including the carbon powder and the water-repellent agent are formed only on the one side of the porous carbon electrode base material. In addition, it is preferred that the porous electrode has a volume density of 0.20-0.75 g/cm, and an air permeability of 25-300 ml/hr cmmmAq in a direction perpendicular to a face thereof. Further it is preferred that the arithmetic average surface roughness of the surface on which the coating layers are formed is 0.1-2 μm, and the maximum surface roughness is 5-20 μm. |
