The present invention relates to a functional food composition for improving memory and a pharmaceutical composition for treating memory containing an extract of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn as an active ingredient. The present invention is effective in providing a functional food and medicine and medical supplies containing an extract of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn as an active ingredient. The present invention can be achieved through the steps of: preparing an extract of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn; evaluating passive avoidance by injecting the extract of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn to an experimental animal in which memory impairment is induced; and evaluating acetylcholinesterase activity to the experimental animal.
