Novel compounds of the formula <FORM:1097359/C2/1> wherein A represents a furyl group or a group of the formula <FORM:1097359/C2/2> in which each of R1 and R2 is a hydrogen, chlorine or bromine atom or a nitro, cyano, amino, acetyl, carboxy, methyl or trifluoromethyl group, X represents a carbonyl or methylene group and Y is a hydrogen atom or a hydroxyethyl, butyl or 2 - (4 - pyridyl) - ethyl group, are prepared by condensing an aldehyde of the formula <FORM:1097359/C2/3> with a compound of the formula <FORM:1097359/C2/4> and thereafter; if desired, alkylating the product obtained to produce a compound of the Formula I wherein Y is a hydroxyethyl, butyl or 2 - (4 - pyridyl)-ethyl group. The products of the condensation reaction may be treated to modify the substituents in the A substituent, e.g. when A is a nitrophenyl group, the product may be reduced to convert the nitro group into an amino group. Aldehydes of the Formula III are prepared by treating the appropriately substituted aniline with nitrous acid followed by reaction with furfural or furan in the presence of a catalyst and, if necessary, subsequently introducing the aldehyde group into the furyl moiety by means of dimethylformamide and phosphorus oxychloride. Pharmaceutical compositions having muscle relaxant activity, for oral or parenteral adminitration, comprise a compound of the Formula I together with a physiologically acceptable carrier.
