PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition which has a sufficiently low viscosity (&eegr;), a sufficiently low rotational viscosity (γ1), a large elastic modulus (K) and a negative dielectric anisotropy &Dgr;&egr; with a large absolute value, without decreasing refractive index anisotropy (&Dgr;n) and a nematic phase-isotropic liquid phase transition temperature (T), and to provide a liquid crystal display element of a VA mode or the like having excellent display qualities and fast response by using the above composition.SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition comprises: as a first component, one or more compounds expressed by general formula (I), with the content of the compounds ranging from 3 mass% to 45 mass%; and as a second component, one or more liquid crystal compounds having a negative &Dgr;&egr; with an absolute value of 3 or more. A liquid crystal display element using the composition is also provided. |
