A system for assisting a prospective customer in a physical retail environment to determine whether an item they are viewing is an authorised item, the system including: a plurality of databases having stored therein information relating to authorised items available for purchase, the information including a unique indicia for each item, or group of items, a record of the present owner of each authorised item, and any authorised distributors and/or retailers, and location information indicative of the supposed geo-location of each authorised item; and a portable user device operable by the customer configured to receive a unique indicia of an viewed item, or group of viewed items, from the customer viewing an available item, or group of items, for purchase, wherein the unique indicia is disposed on, or associated with, the viewed item, or group of viewed items, attempt to retrieve data from the plurality of databases containing stored information relating to the authorised item to which the received unique indicia relates, receive location information indicative of the actual geo-location of portable user device, and receive either (i) a response indicating the failure to locate stored information corresponding with the supplied unique indicia, or (ii) data pertaining to the authorised item according to the unique indicia stored in the plurality of databases to enable comparison of the received information pertaining to the authorised item with the viewed item for purchase to assess whether the viewed item for purchase is authorised. |
