A synthetic aperture ultrasound tomography imaging system for imaging a tissue medium, comprising: one or more ultrasound transducer arrays; the one or more ultrasound transducer arrays comprising a plurality of transducers; wherein the plurality of transducers are configured such that a first set of two or more transducers are positioned at an opposing spaced-apart orientation from a second set of two or more transducers such that the first set of two or more transducers face the second set of two or more transducers; wherein the first and second sets of two or more transducers are positioned at spaced-apart locations so as to allow for the tissue medium to be positioned in between the first and second sets of two or more transducers; a processor; and programming executable on said processor and configured for: exciting a first transducer within the first set of two or more transducers to generate an ultrasound field within the tissue medium; andreceiving a transmission signal and a reflection signal from at least the second set of two or more transducers.
