This invention provides an auto-focus device for eliminating the sense of oddness when a switch is made from phase difference AF to light path length difference AF when an arbitrary range is set as a focusing subject range. A cameraman sets the desired range as the focusing subject range. Until a focus lens reaches a first threshold value position (P20), the focus lens (2) is moved using a phase difference AF evaluation value obtained from a phase difference AF sensor so that the center portion of the imaging range is focused. Until the focus lens reaches a second threshold value position (P30), the focus lens (2) is moved using a phase difference AF evaluation value outputted from a phase difference imaging element and obtained from a signal in a range corresponding to the set focusing subject range. When the focus lens reaches a second threshold value position (P30), the focus lens (2) is positioned at the focusing position using, of the differential AF evaluation values obtained from a light path length difference AF sensor, the differential AF evaluation value obtained on the basis of the set focusing subject range. |
