ELECTRO-OPTICAL CODE READING TERMINAL FOR SWITCHING FROM A PRINTED CODE READING MODE TO AN ELECTRONICALLY DISPLAYED CODE READING MODE

An electro-optical code reading terminal for dynamically switching mode of operation from a printed code reading mode to an electronically displayed code reading mode is provided. The electro-optical code reading terminal measures and monitors, using one or more magnetic sensors, a magnetic field experienced at the electro-optical code reading terminal. When the electro-optical code reading terminal device determines that a change in the measured magnetic field exceeds a predetermined threshold within a predetermined time period, the electro-optical code reading terminal device infers presence of an electronically displayed code. The electro-optical code reading terminal device then switches its mode of operation from the printed code reading mode of operation to the electronically displayed code reading mode of operation.

1. An electro-optical code reading terminal comprising:
an energizable illumination system operative for illuminating objects positioned in a field of view of the electro-optical code reading terminal with illumination light; a solid-state, exposable imager having an array of light sensors and operative for capturing return illumination light from objects positioned in the field of view of the electro-optical code reading terminal; at least one magnetic sensor operative for measuring magnetic field experienced by the electro-optical code reading terminal; a controller operative for dynamically switching mode of operation of the electro-optical code reading terminal from a printed code reading mode of operation to an electronically displayed code reading mode of operation responsive to determining that a change in the measured magnetic field exceeds a predetermined threshold within a predetermined time period.
