Provided is an optical element for which a publicly-known film formation method for a light-absorbing layer (or a light-emitting layer) which uses a chalcogenide-based material can be used as is, and which will not impact conductivity and transparency in the boundary area between an oxide layer and the light-absorbing layer (or the light-emitting layer) which uses the chalcogenide-based material. Also provided is a method for manufacturing such an optical element. An optical element (10) having a structure in which an oxide layer (13) is inserted between an alkali-metal-containing layer (11) and a chalcogenide-based light-absorbing (light-emitting) layer (14) is characterized in that in this structure a metal film (12) is inserted between the alkali-metal-containing layer (11) and the oxide layer (13). The metal film (12) functions as an alkali metal dispersion promotion layer that promotes dispersion, in the oxide layer (13), of an alkali metal (such as sodium) provided by natural dispersion from the alkali-metal-containing layer (11). Due to this configuration, the alkali metal can pass from the alkali-metal-containing layer (11) through the metal film (12) and oxide layer (13) and be supplied in sufficient quantity to the chalcogenide-based light-absorbing (light-emitting) layer (14). |
