A swing-away spare wheel carrier for a vehicle has three mounting studs 22 for a five stud wheel. Two mounting studs are horizontal at the top, in order to maximize ground clearance to the tyre. The upper hinge 13 defines a gap adapted to receive a canvas tilt or the lower edge of a hard top. The carrier typically a frame including two limbs 16, 17 formed from a bent tube having an acute angle and a welded tubular support to which an inset plate 21 is welded. The frame pivots about an upright axis passing through the hinges 13,14. The invention is aimed at least partly at the lowest part of the spare wheel being sufficiently above a tow hitch to permit attachment and detachment of a trailer, and articulation of the trailer drawbar in use. |
