The present invention relates to operation of an electronic device and, more specifically, to a method for executing an application in response to user input and an electronic device forming the same. According to the present invention, a method for operating the electronic device includes: an operation of detecting the movement of a pen through t touch panel installed in a display part; an operation of searching an application list for an application corresponding to the movement in response to the movement of the pen; an operation of displaying information of the searched application; and an operation of executing the application corresponding to the displayed information when user input for the selection of the displayed information is detected.
