Cutting a hollow, cylindrical ink cartridge having an open end and a seal plate, the cutter having a support and at least one first blade 24 for cutting in an axial direction, a second cutter 32 movable between cutting an non-cutting positions for cutting in a lateral direction when it is sensed the seal plate is at a predetermined position. Thus the seal plate is separated from the rest of the cartridge for recycling. The support may be a housing 20 having concentric inner 26 and outer 22 collars with a channel 30 between them through which the open end of the cartridge passes, blades 24 held on the inner collar. A ram (50, figure 1) may move the cartridge towards housing 20, a movable plunger 36 contacting the seal plate. A limit switch is triggered when plunger is a predetermined distance from the housing, ram is halted, cutter 32 moves to the cutting position and inner collar is rotated, engagement of blades 24 with the cartridge causing cartridge to rotate with the collar for circumferential cutting by cutter 32. Cutter 32 may move instead of the cartridge. |
