PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backup device, a backup system, a backup method and a program, capable of shortening the time required for backup processing and restoration processing even when a data amount is huge. SOLUTION: The backup device for backing up data stored in a computer (active server 10) includes a storage part 26 for storing the initial information of the data to be a backup object and its updating information, a compression processing part 27 and a transmission part 28. The compression processing part 27 calculates the estimated sizes of compressed data when the compression is performed by respective compression system for at least two compression systems capable of compressing the initial information and the updating information together, selects the compression system on the basis of the respective estimated sizes, and compresses the initial information and the updating information using the selected compression system further. The transmission part 28 transmits the compressed initial information and updating information to an alternative server 40 together with information specifying the selected compression system.
