PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shock absorber capable of smoothing characteristics of damping force. SOLUTION: The shock absorber includes a cylinder 1 with a working fluid filled therein, a piston 3 which is slidably fitted in the cylinder 1 and partitions inside of the cylinder 1 into 2 chambers 4, 5, a piston rod 8 which is connected to the piston 3 and simultaneously is extended outside the cylinder 1, the first passages 30a, 30b and the second passages 135, 136 out which the working fluid flows from one of the chambers 4, 5 within the cylinder 1 by travel of the piston 3, damping force generated mechanisms 32a, 32b which are provided in the first passages 30a, 30b and generate damping force, a pressure chamber 132 which is provided halfway between the second passages 135, 136, a free piston 57 which is movably provided in the pressure chamber 132 and sections the second passages 135, 136 into two regions and damping valves 117, 121 which are provided on inside and outside passage ports 111, 112 of the pressure chamber 132.
