Attaching rubber to other surfaces; indiarubber compositions.-Vulcanizable material such as rubber is attached to surfaces of metal, synthetic resins, wood and the like, by means of a film containing a proteid resistant to water, and rubber- A solution or dispersion of a proteid such as dextrin, glue, glutene, gelatine, isinglass, albumen, or haemoglobin is mixed with an aqueous dispersion of rubber natural or artificial, suitable proportions being 40 parts of haemoglobin to 50 parts of latex solids: 10 parts of a vulcanizing agent which may include an accelerator may beadded. A film of this adhesive is applied to the article to be coated, and after drying, the proteid is rendered insoluble, for example, by treatment with formaldehyde, a bichromate and light, or in the case of albumen which is preferred, by heat sufficient to coagulate the albumen say 150‹ F., but not to vulcanize the rubber. Rubber is applied to the dried film, if necessary after brushing over with a solvent, and is vulcanized thereon. The invention is applicable to the attaching of tyres to wheels, lining vats &c. and for cementing surfaces other than rubber together by applying a film of the adhesive to the two surfaces, pressing them together, and vulcanizing.</p> |
