[Class 95] Wooden articles are coated by heating them at a temperature equal to or above that at which the subsequent coating composition is to be baked, applying the coating composition while the article is at substantially the same temperature at which it is heated and baking until the coating is dry. In the examples : (1) a previously filled birchwood panel was heated at 280‹ F. for ¥ hour, removed from the heater and immediately sprayed with a primer composition consisting of barium base titanium dioxide pigment, urea - formaldehyde - mono - hydric alcohol resin, 45 per cent soya bean oilmodified glyceryl phthalate, butyl alcohol and a hydrocarbon solvent. The panel was then baked for one hour at 270‹ F., cooled, sanded, sprayed with a pigmented enamel consisting of titanium dioxide pigment, melamine-formaldehyde-butanol resin, urea-formaldehyde butanol resin, 43 per cent dehydrated castor oil-modified glyceryl phthalate, butyl alcohol and an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent. (2) A poplarwood panel was heated for thirty minutes at 225‹ F., removed from the heater, immediately sprayed with a primer composition very similar to the one in example (1), baked at 225‹ F. for forty-five minutes, cooled, sanded, treated with an enamel composition similar to that in example (1), and finally baked at 225‹ F. for an hour. Other commonly-used woods are maple, clear white pine and gumwood. Baking enamels of drying and semi-drying oil-modified alkyd resins, urea-formaldehyde-monohydric alcohol resins, phenol and substituted phenolformaldehyde resins, amino triazine and substituted amino triazine-formaldehyde resins, oleoresinous vehicles containing drying oils such as chinawood and linseed oils with natural or synthetic resins, and mixtures thereof may be used. Among.the 'articles which may be so treated are mentioned kitchen cabinets and general utility cabinets, wood furniture, toys, tool handles, bowling pins, bar and counter fixtures, office furniture and wood refrigerator cabinets.</p> |
