Apparatus is provided for applying current to a nerve, including a housing, adapted to be placed in a vicinity of the nerve, and at least one cathode and at least one anode, fixed to the housing. The apparatus further includes two or more passive electrodes, fixed to the housing, and a conducting element, which electrically couples the passive electrodes to one another. Other embodiments are also described.

1. Apparatus for applying current to a nerve, comprising:
a housing, which is adapted to be placed around the nerve, so as to define a longitudinal axis; one or more electrodes, which are fixed to the housing; and two elongated end insulating elements, which are fixed to the housing such that all of the electrodes are longitudinally between the end insulating elements, and such that each of the end insulating elements has a length in a direction parallel with the longitudinal axis of at least 2 mm, wherein the housing and the end insulating elements are shaped such that (a) a first distance between a radially-outer surface of the housing and the longitudinal axis is greater than (b) respective second distances between respective radially-outer surfaces of the end insulating elements and the longitudinal axis, wherein the housing is shaped so as to define (a) an outer wall that defines the radially-outer surface of the housing and (b) two end walls that extend from the outer wall toward the longitudinal axis, and wherein the two end insulating elements are fixed to the two end walls, respectively, and extend in respective opposite directions longitudinally away from the outer wall.
