摘要 This invention relates to techniques for managing the transmission and reception of data fragments that contains one or more data blocks. One embodiment of the invention includes the following steps: processing the fragments sequentially, wherein each fragment has a processing index that corresponds to sequential processing of that fragment; processing each of the fragments until a termination upon meeting at least one pre-defined condition; assigning a timer to an un-terminated fragment having a lowest processing index; starting said timer having a timeout value; and running said timer until the processing of said un-terminated fragment is terminated.

A receiver for processing data fragments from a transmitter using a single timer for one connection between the receiver and the transmitter, the receiver comprising: a first module for processing the fragments according to a processing index in each of the fragments, wherein the each of the fragments has one or more data blocks, the processing index in the each of the fragments is to facilitate the fragments to be processed sequentially, the each of the fragments is processed till one or more of predefined conditions is met, the predefined conditions include: the timer assigned to the each of the fragments is timed out or an acknowledgement of at least one of the data blocks in the each of the fragments is received; and a second module designed to start the timer assigned to the each of the fragments, wherein the timer has a timeout value depending on a life of the each of the fragments and time parameters thereof, wherein the timer is running until processing of the each of the fragments is terminated, the timer is then reassigned to a next one of the fragments before the next one of the fragments is processed.
