In certain aspects, a method includes receiving a first signal from a conductivity detector connected to a line through which a solution of salt concentrate and fluid flows and determining a first conductivity of the solution based on the first signal. The method also includes receiving a second signal from the conductivity detector at a time after receiving the first signal, determining a second conductivity of the solution based on the second signal, and determining whether the second conductivity is less than the first conductivity by at least a threshold amount.

A method performed by data processing apparatus of a dialysis machine, the method comprising: receiving a first signal from a conductivity detector connected to a line through which a solution of bicarbonate and fluid flows to a dialyzer of the dialysis machine, wherein the fluid flows from a fluid source, through a fluid line segment connected to the fluid source and the line, to the line; determining a first conductivity of the solution based on the first signal; receiving a second signal from the conductivity detector at a time after receiving the first signal; determining a second conductivity of the solution based on the second signal; and determining that solid bicarbonate in a container through which the solution flows is approaching a level insufficient to maintain the solution at a conductivity suitable for flowing though the dialyzer, based on a determination that the second conductivity is less than the first conductivity by at least a threshold amount.
