Communication link with intra-packet flow control

A method for communication includes transmitting a data packet from a first port to a second port over a communication link. After transmission of a first portion of the data packet, the transmission is temporarily suspended, a flow-control message is sent from the first port to the second port over the communication link while the transmission is temporarily suspended, and then the transmission is resumed so as to transmit a second portion of the data packet.

1. A method for communication, comprising:
transmitting data packet from a first port to a second port over an Ethernet or Infiniband communication link; after transmission of a first portion of the data packet, temporarily suspending the transmission, sending a flow-control message from the first port to the second port over the Ethernet or Infiniband communication link while the transmission is temporarily suspended, and then resuming the transmission so as to transmit a second portion of the data packet; and forwarding the data packet from the second port to a subsequent destination, the forwarded packet including dummy data inserted by circuitry at the second port at the time of the temporary suspension, between the first and second portions.
