PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new production method of a binaphthalene compound that is suitable as a monomer for forming a resin (optical resin) constituting an optical member represented by an optical lens or an optical film.SOLUTION: It is found that in the reaction of 1,1'-bi-2-naphthols and ethylene carbonate or ethylene oxide, byproduct of the reaction is decomposed and removed as well as a coloring component is removed, by adding an alkali aqueous solution by 3 wt.% or more to a reaction mixture obtained by the above reaction and heating and stirring the mixture at a temperature of 50°C or higher. By using the reaction mixture treated as above described, 2,2'-bis(2-hydroxyethoxy)-1,1'-binaphthalenes can be taken out as a crystal by a crystallization operation. Thus, 2,2'-bis(2-hydroxyethoxy)-1,1'-binaphthalenes with favorable hue and high purity can be easily produced. |
