Antiseptic or bactericidal coating compositions, such as paints, enamels and lacquers, are obtained by incorporating together a zinc oxide pigment, a chlorinated long-chain hydrocarbon polymer (e.g. chlorinated rubber or chlorinated polyisobutylene), an alkyd resin which has been modified with an oil and also with halogenated mixed fatty acids derived from a glyceride oil and/or the product obtained from the reaction of an halogenated phenol with an aldehyde, and a suitable solvent or solvents selected in accordance with the particular long-chain hydrocarbon polymer employed. A suitable solvent for chlorinated polyisobutylene is a mixture of white spirit and turpentine. A plasticiser, e.g. chlorinated naphthalene, and additional antiseptic ingredients, e.g. oxidised turpentine or parachlormetaxylenol, may be added. In an example, zinc oxide, "Asbestine" (Registered Trade Mark), oil-modified glyceryl phthalate resin further modified with 10 per cent of parachlormetaxylenol-formaldehyde resin, chlorinated rubber (65 per cent chlorine), chlorinated naphthalene (50 per cent chlorine), and oxidised turpentine (non-volatile), are incorporated in a solvent comprising 9 : 1 Turpentine/Cellosolve (Registered Trade Mark). |
