The present invention relates to a smart cruise apparatus which can improve reliability and stability of a smart cruise function by enabling the apparatus to stably trace a vehicle driving ahead, and a control method thereof. The smart cruise apparatus according to the present invention comprises: a color sensor; a brightness sensing means; and a controller which controls acceleration or brake action of the own vehicle by determining whether a vehicle driving ahead exists with the color sensor, and determining whether the vehicle is on a lane identical to that of the own vehicle with the brightness sensing means.
