Provided is a liquid crystal display device for stably obtaining good residual image characteristics even though a photo-alignment technique is used. In the liquid crystal display including a TFT substrate (106) having an alignment layer (606), a counter substrate (107) disposed to face the TFT substrate (106) and having an alignment layer (705) formed thereon, and a liquid crystal (LC) insertedly supported between the alignment layers (606, 705), the alignment layers (606, 705) are formed of a material able to provide liquid crystal anchoring force by polarized light irradiation, and a ratio of oxygen atoms on surfaces of the alignment layers (606, 705) is higher than that of the interiors of the alignment layers (606, 705). |
