ANTIBODIES SPECIFIC FOR PROTOFIBRIL FORM OF BETA-AMYLOID PROTEIN

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide further improved compositions and methods for treatment and/or prevention of Alzheimer's disease, for which a need remains despite the current knowledge in the field of treatment and prevention of Alzheimer's disease.SOLUTION: Antibodies have been isolated and subjected to characteristic evaluation, which have specific affinity to a repeating conformational epitope of a protofibril form of human &bgr;-amyloid peptide as compared to low molecular weight forms of &bgr;-amyloid peptide. The isolated antibodies and related pharmaceutically effective compositions may be useful for treatment and/or prevention of Alzheimer's disease by effectively preventing fibril formation by &bgr;-amyloid peptide in protofibril form. The isolated antibodies are also useful for various diagnostic assays and related kits.
