Provided is a vehicle control device which, when following a preceding vehicle, can effectively improve fuel efficiency and cut emission gas without causing discomfort to the driver. When following the preceding vehicle, the kinetic energy which the local vehicle will require is predicted on the basis of the kinetic energy of the local vehicle, the speed of the preceding vehicle and the distance from the preceding vehicle, and, on the basis of said predicted kinetic energy and the present kinetic energy, it is determined whether or not there is sufficient kinetic energy for the local vehicle to be able to follow the preceding vehicle by inertial travel; if the kinetic energy is determined to be sufficient and the operation and travel states of the local vehicle fulfill other conditions for idling reduction during travel, control is performed for stopping the engine. |
