The positive electrode active material is characterized by: being represented by LiaMOx (wherein, M is an element that includes at least one type of element selected from nickel, cobalt and manganese (but does not include lithium or oxygen); a is 1.1 to 1.7; and x is the number of moles of oxygen required to satisfy the valences of lithium and M); and having a ratio (l/r) of a crystallite diameter (l) of the (003) plane to a crystallite diameter (r) of the (110) plane belonging to a crystal of an R-3m space group of 2.6 or higher in X-ray diffraction patterns.
