PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device that has reduced thickness and maintains good visibility.SOLUTION: An image display device includes (1) a white light source 2 having a continuous emission spectrum, (2) image display cell, (3) a polarization plate arranged closer to a visual recognition side than the image display cell, and (4) a polyethylene naphthalate film 11a arranged closer to the visual recognition side than the polarization plate. The polyethylene naphthalate film 11a satisfies the following physical properties: (a) retardation (Re) of 3000 nm or more and 30000 nm or less, and (b) birefringence (&Dgr;Nxy) of 0.15 or more. |
