Disclosed are an intelligent electronic device and a method for determining a ground fault point using the same. The intelligent electronic device, which is provided to detect a fault section by a mutual communication when a ground fault is detected and to transmit a control command to separate the fault section to a protection device, comprises: a signal generating unit to transmit a waveform signal to a line of a fault section direction after the fault section is separated; a signal detecting unit to detect the waveform signal viewed from an input terminal; a database to store a matching table to correspond current waveform data according to a line length; a waveform searching unit to search for a current waveform signal detected by the signal detecting unit in the matching table; and a fault point determining unit to determine a ground fault point by extracting the line length corresponding to the current waveform data searched by the waveform searching unit.
