PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an olefin with high yields by inhibiting multimerization of an olefin in a dehydration reaction of aliphatic alcohols.SOLUTION: This invention provides a method for producing an olefin, in which a raw material alcohol is subjected to a dehydration reaction in the presence of an acid catalyst. The acid catalyst contains a metal oxide. The raw material alcohol is composed of two or more kinds of alcohols which are primary aliphatic alcohols having carbon atoms of 8 to 22 inclusive, and which are different from each other in the number of carbon atoms. The reaction temperature is from 200°C to 300°C inclusive.
