Method and Apparatus for Automating Access Rights Creation and Control in Machine-to-Machine Systems

In one aspect of the teachings herein, “inaugural” registrations by M2M applications are reported according to stored subscription information and the notification of an inaugural registration by a given application is used for the automatic determination of permissions for the application with respect to one or more resources stored in the M2M network. For example, a first application performs an inaugural registration with the Services Capability Layer (SCL) hosted at a first node and a corresponding inaugural registration notification is sent to the SCL at a second node, based on the second node being subscribed for notifications. Application-related identifiers in the inaugural registration notification are used at the second node to determine permissions for the first application with respect to a resource maintained at the second node. Further, ongoing registration and notification tracking prevent repeated notifications and minimize notification traffic between nodes, while still providing for automated setting of permissions.

1. A method at a first node in a Machine-to-Machine (M2M) network comprising:
receiving a subscription request from a second node in the M2M network, said subscription request requesting that inaugural registration notifications be sent from the first node to the second node; storing subscription information corresponding to the subscription request; detecting that a registration by an application with a Services Capability Layer (SCL) hosted by the first node is an inaugural registration; sending, in response to said detection, an inaugural registration notification to the second node, according to the subscription information; and recording the inaugural registration in registration information stored at the first node, for distinguishing a subsequent registration by the application with the SCL as a non-inaugural registration.
