An air intake system 1 for a pressure charged internal combustion engine 7. The air intake system 1 includes a heat exchanger 4, (104a, 104b, figure 2, 204 figure 3) downstream a pressure charger 3 and is configured to increase the temperature of intake air prior to its introduction into a combustion chamber at part load or in response to a reduction in power demand in order to reduce the extent to which intake air is throttled by valves 50, 51 supplying pressure charged intake air into an air plenum 6 feeding the engine 7. A throttle means downstream of the heat exchanger is operable to adjust the quantity and/or density of intake air introduced into an engine, and is configured to control the throttle means at least partially based on the temperature of the intake air. Bypass means is configured to cause at least a portion of pressure charged intake air to bypass the heat exchanger, thereby increasing the temperature of the pressure charged intake air. Control of intake air temperature in conjunction with throttle control can improve engine efficiency. |
