PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air conditioner and a control method for the same capable of preventing delay of timing required for protection due to an overcooled state of a refrigerant made to flow in the position of a temperature sensor installed in an indoor side heat exchanger and advance of timing required for protection due to a heating steam state of the refrigerant made to flow in the position of the temperature sensor, in control of the air conditioner to suppress increase in high pressure during heating. SOLUTION: The air conditioner includes: an intermediate part temperature sensor 5 installed in a section near an intermediate portion between a heating inlet and outlet of the indoor side heat exchanger 2; and an inlet temperature sensor 6 installed at the heating inlet of the indoor side heat exchanger 2. When determining that a refrigerant made to flow in the position of the intermediate part temperature sensor 5 is made to enter a subcool region, a control device 12 performs protection control to suppress increase in high pressure during heating by controlling a compressor 1 or a decompression device 4 by a detection value by the inlet temperature sensor 6 and by a value obtained by making a correction to a detection value by the intermediate part temperature sensor 5.
