A method (10) of determining an appropriate data transfer transaction waiting time extension (46) in a system (12) comprising a host (16) and an NFC controller (18), the method (10) being characterised by dynamically determining a value for a waiting time extension multiplier (32, 34, 36) independently of a waiting time extension multiplier command or configuration parameter sent from the host to the NFC controller. The NFC controller (18) may dynamically determine the waiting time extension multiplier value (46) to be one falling within the permissible limits (44) of the communication protocol standard governing the data transfer transaction (26, 28). The temporary frame waiting time may be equal to a maximum frame waiting time (44), the maximum frame waiting time (44) being calculated (32, 34, 36) using the maximum frame waiting interval value as specified in the relevant Communication Protocol standards (26, 28), for example, dependent on the command processing time for the data transfer transaction (26, 28). |
