PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyphenylene ether, having excellent coloring property during heating, suppressing generation of die drool, a gel and the like during processing, and having excellent molding fluidity and high purity. SOLUTION: In the polyphenylene ether, the amount of a residual metal catalyst is 0.5 ppm or less, the amount of a component having a molecular weight of 50,000 or more is in the range of 0 to 20 mass%, and the amount of a component having a molecular weight of 8,000 or less is in the range of 0 to 30 mass%. The amount of the residual metal catalyst is preferably 0.3 ppm or less, and the dispersion degree expressed by weight average molecular weight (Mw)/number average molecular weight (Mn) is preferably in the range of 1.6 to 3.0.
