PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of driving a semiconductor laser element capable of reducing speckle noise, and to provide a semiconductor laser device. SOLUTION: In a method of driving a semiconductor laser element that has a semiconductor element structure in which a stripe-shaped optical waveguide is provided between a p-side electrode and an n-side electrode, and in which at least one of the p-side electrode and the n-side electrode is composed of a plurality of chip electrodes separated in a direction longitudinally of the optical waveguide, the chip electrodes to which forward voltage more than or equal to an oscillation threshold value is applied are periodically changed, or the number of the chip electrodes to which the forward voltage more than or equal to the oscillation threshold value is applied is periodically changed.
