PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a zoom lens that is compact and suitable for moving image shooting, and an imaging apparatus. SOLUTION: A zoom lens comprises:, in order from an object side to an image side, a first lens group G1 having positive refractive power; a second lens group G2 having negative refractive power; an aperture diaphragm S; a third lens group G3 having positive refractive power; a fourth lens group G4 having negative refractive power; and a fifth lens group G5 having positive refractive power. When varying power from a wide angle end to a telephoto end, positions of the first lens group and the aperture diaphragm S are at least fixed, the second lens group G2 and the third lens group G3 are moved in an optical axis direction, and each distance between each lens group and the aperture diaphragm S is varied. When focusing from an infinity focusing state to a close range focusing state, the fourth lens group G4 is moved in an optical axis direction. The zoom lens satisfies the following conditional expression(1): -0.36<f4/f1<-0.05...(1) (where f1 represents a focal length of the first lens group, and f4 represents a focal length of the fourth lens group).
