A method for performing multi-tasking using an external display device in an electronic device includes the steps of: executing at least one application; determining whether an application screen is output to the external display device with respect to the at least one application; requesting the external display device to execute an emulator when the application screen output to the external display device is determined; and transmitting a screen of an application, which is determined as the screen output to the external display device in the at least one application and includes an application identifier, to the external display device if the external display device is requested to execute the emulator.
