To improve the wetting properties of alkaline mercerizing lyes iso amyl alcohol together with phenols free from or poor in o-cresol, are added. In an example, iso amyl alcohol and ortho cresol free phenol, or cresol or xylenol mixtures are added to the mercerizing lyes.
