A method of operating a network control apparatus (250) in which the network control apparatus (250) is wirelessly connected to at least one wireless device (210). In the method, the network control apparatus (250) (for example an eNodeB) indicates a device-to-device (D2D) timing advance value to said wireless device (210). The device-to-device timing advance value is for use by the wireless device (210) in scheduling the transmission of a device-to-device signal to a second wireless device (220). A plurality of devices may form a group which have a common timing advance value. Using a timing advance value to schedule direct communication between devices over long distances counteracts the propagation delay.
