A permanent magnet machine comprises a stator and rotor on a common axis. The rotor comprises plural axially-stacked sections, each having asymmetrically placed magnet openings at its periphery and comprising plural laminations with a key and slot 146 driving arrangement on a shaft. The laminations for a first section have a common geometry with those of a second section, permitting manufacture by a single tool, and are flipped about a radial axis 136 with respect to those of the second section upon assembly so that the openings of the first section are angularly displaced relative to those of the second. There can be more than two sections with laminations of a third section being flipped about a second axis 150 that are displaced by an angle. There can be two slot and key driving features per section that are spaced 180 degrees apart and displaced by 90 degrees from those of another section. Third and fourth sections can have laminates flipped about the 90 degree displaced features. Permanent magnets are placed asymmetrically and angularly offset in the lamination openings to attenuate oscillations in torque caused by harmonic components of magnetic flux. |
