LED devices having lenses and methods of making same

Disclosed herein are LED devices having lenses and methods of making the devices. The LED devices are made using an optical layer comprising a plurality of lens features. The optical layer is disposed relative to the LED die such that at least one LED die is optically coupled to at least one lens feature. A lens can then be made from the lens feature and excess optical layer removed to provide the device.

1. An LED assembly, comprising:
a substrate comprising a plurality of reflecting cups; at least one LED die disposed in at least one reflecting cup; an optical bonding composition disposed over the at least one LED die and the substrate, forming a layer; and an optical layer comprising a plurality of lens features, wherein the plurality of lens features are configured to present multiple lens features over each of the plurality of reflecting cups, the optical layer contacting the optical bonding composition such that the at least one LED die is optically coupled to at least one of the multiple lens features over the reflecting cup containing the LED die.
