The present invention relates to a composition for the prevention and treatment of an inflammatory disease or an allergic disease which includes, as an active ingredient, an extract of a mixed herbal medicine consisting of Angelicae Dahurica and Xanthium strumarium L. It has been verified that the extract of the present invention has anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and anti-rhinitis effects of inhibiting the release of b-hexaminidase (b-Hex) secreted from mast cells, the generation of leukotriene (LT), and the generation of COX-2 dependent prostaglandin (PGD2), reducing a serum IgE concentration in an animal model of rhinitis induced by ovalbumin, and inhibiting the generation of IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13 secreted from spleen cells in the animal model of rhinitis. Therefore, the extract can be used for a composition to prevent and treat an inflammatory disease or an allergic disease.
