A method intended to control a speed control system (SC) of a vehicle (V) with a programmable speed setpoint. This method comprises a step (i) of determining the time that has elapsed between a deactivation and a reactivation of a speed regulation function of the system (SC) on a programmed speed setpoint, and a step (ii) of determining, for the system (SC), on the basis of said elapsed time that has been determined, at least one acceleration that it must apply to the vehicle (V) in order for the current speed of same to converge in a chosen way with the programmed speed setpoint.
