Density phase separation device

A mechanical separator (40) for separating a fluid sample into first and second phases within a collection container (82) is disclosed. The mechanical separator (40) has a separator body with a through-hole (46) adapted for allowing fluid to pass through. The separator body includes a float (42), having a first density, and a ballast (44), having a second density greater than the first density. The body also includes a seal between the separator (40) and the container (82). In use the separator changes position in a centrifuge from a position in which fluid can flow (F) through the hole to a closed position.
