Methods and apparatuses for encoding and decoding a motion vector are disclosed. According to an embodiment of the present invention, a method for encoding a motion vector includes: performing motion estimation on a current block of a current picture and generating a motion vector of the current block in a first reference picture; generating a motion vector predictor by using a motion vector of an adjacent block referring to the first reference picture in the case that the adjacent block having the motion vector referring to the first reference picture exists from among adjacent blocks encoded before the current block; generating a motion vector predictor by using the motion vector of the adjacent block referring to a reference picture other than the first reference picture in the case that the adjacent block having the motion vector referring to the first reference picture does not exist from among the adjacent blocks; and encoding a difference between the motion vector predictor and the motion vector of the current block as motion vector information of the current block. |
