The present invention relates to a counting apparatus and a method thereof for the reduction of power consumption in a binning mode. The counting apparatus and the method thereof provided by the present invention control (block) the input of a counter or the clock of the counter in order to prevent power consumption in the counter which is positioned in a disused column in case of a binning mode operation of the counter. The counting apparatus includes: a first operation unit which blocks the pixel signal of a disused column by operating the pixel signal from a pixel array and a first or second control signal which is transmitted from a control unit depending on whether each column is used or not in a binning mode; a second operation unit which operates a counter clock and the output signal of the first operation unit; and a counting unit which counts the output signal of the second operation unit.
