A backlight device (12) is provided with the following: an LED (17); a light guide plate (19) having on an end surface thereof a light incidence surface (19a) on which light from the LED (17) is incident and on the plate surface a light emission surface (19b) that emits light; an LED substrate (18) on which the LED (17) is mounted and which has on at least a portion thereof a light guide plate superimposing section (22) that overlaps, on the light emission surface (19b) side, a light incident surface side end section (24) that is an end section positioned on the light incidence surface (19a) side from between the end sections of the light guide plate (19); and a light blocking part (27) that by being provided at the light guide plate superimposing section (22) of the LED substrate (18) is arranged so as to be interposed between the light guide plate superimposing section (22) and the light incident surface side end section (24) of the light guide plate (19).
